The MPA degree can be obtained through the College of Arts and Sciences at either the Norman or Tulsa campus. While the program does not have a fully online component, the curriculum is self-paced for part and full-time students to provide flexibility for those that are working professionals. 36 credit hours are required to complete the program, and part-time students that take six credit hours each semester (and less during the summer) should complete the program in three years – 67 percent of those enrolled are able to finish the program in this time frame.
All credits are separated into three different categories: required courses, area requirements, and electives. Required courses are an introduction to data analysis, Program Evaluation and Applied Policy Analysis, Public Budgeting and Finance, and the capstone project. Area requirements are one course from the following categories: Organizations, Management, Public Policy, and American Political Process. Four concentrations are offered with the degree: Public Policy, Nonprofit Management, customized general electives (three courses needed), and an intensive study on a specific topic that is approved by the program director.
In order to gain entry into the program, prospective students should submit the following: application with fee, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose that is 1,000 words or less, and a current resume. There is no need to submit GRE scores. Students are administered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Online courses are provided with the Canvas learning management system. Potential features in these courses includes lecture recordings, assignment submission, discussion boards, and quizzes and exams. The amount of features available are at the professor’s discretion.
