Online MPA Programs in Oklahoma

One of the most convenient ways to earn a Master of Public Administration is through an online program. Not only are they typically geared toward a full-time professional, but they often provide self-paced coursework with weekly deadlines and either asynchronous or synchronous lectures. Most learning management systems provide a way to keep in contact with faculty members and other peers enrolled in the program. Many schools have the ability to offer their full on-campus curriculum in an online format.

At the moment, there are no NASPAA-accredited online schools in the state of Oklahoma. There is an accelerated program for undergraduates that have chosen a Political Science or Public Affairs and Administration major. They can complete the Bachelor of Arts and the MPA degree in a total of five years.

Randall University offers an MPA program that can be completed fully online. The 39-credit hour curriculum has areas of emphasis in Government Management and Nonprofit Management, and core courses will explore topics like data analysis, budgeting, administrative law, and macroeconomics.

The University of Central Oklahoma also has select courses available online.

The MPA degree can be obtained through the College of Arts and Sciences at either the Norman or Tulsa campus. While the program does not have a fully online component, the curriculum is self-paced for part and full-time students to provide flexibility for those that are working professionals. 36 credit hours are required to complete the program, and part-time students that take six credit hours each semester (and less during the summer) should complete the program in three years – 67 percent of those enrolled are able to finish the program in this time frame.

All credits are separated into three different categories: required courses, area requirements, and electives. Required courses are an introduction to data analysis, Program Evaluation and Applied Policy Analysis, Public Budgeting and Finance, and the capstone project. Area requirements are one course from the following categories: Organizations, Management, Public Policy, and American Political Process. Four concentrations are offered with the degree: Public Policy, Nonprofit Management, customized general electives (three courses needed), and an intensive study on a specific topic that is approved by the program director.

In order to gain entry into the program, prospective students should submit the following: application with fee, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose that is 1,000 words or less, and a current resume. There is no need to submit GRE scores. Students are administered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Online courses are provided with the Canvas learning management system. Potential features in these courses includes lecture recordings, assignment submission, discussion boards, and quizzes and exams. The amount of features available are at the professor’s discretion.
