American University

The online program American through the School of Public Affairs offers is a blend of the core curriculum to receive a Master of Public Administration and Master of Public Policy. A Policy Practicum is the final course in the program where students use what they have learned toward a client. While the program is separate from the on-campus MPA, students can still receive a student ID and take advantage of campus resources if desired.

MPAP at American University

The universal degree, the Master of Public Administration and Policy (MPAP), sees a 100 percent rate of success post-graduation, either with graduates looking at further education or being employed at public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Various jobs include public policy administration, public finance, project management, community development, and government relations.

Admission requires a completed graduate application form with a $55 fee, resume, statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, undergraduate transcripts, and GRE or LSAT scores. A phone interview with an admission adviser is also needed, and they can waive GRE scores if requirements are met.

The George Washington University

A Master of Public Administration is obtained through the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at GWU with a requirement of 40 total credit hours. Both the MPA and Master of Public Policy (MPP) offered has various fields of study to choose from, each including at least three or four courses from 9 to 12 credits.

  • Education Policy
  • Environmental Policy
  • Health Policy
  • Homeland Security and Emergency Management
  • International Development

25 credits are among the core course requirements, and the final three-to-six credits are reserved for additional electives or field work. Part-time and full-time students are accepted into the program and can expect to complete the curriculum in four semesters. Evening classes are offered for part-time flexibility, but no weekend opportunities and no online option. A graduate certificate is offered for Nonprofit Management and Budget and Public Finance, geared toward those who do not want to commit to a Master’s degree.

In order to get into the program, students must have a Bachelor’s degree, a minimum of a B average in their prior coursework (a GPA of 3.5 or above is recommended), but they do not need to submit GRE scores. Nothing more is required, although the university suggests the following to help in potential acceptance: relevant work experience, personal achievement, and letters of recommendation.
